Why I’m a Couture Cowgirl

Rebecca L. Castaneda

Owner, Cowgirl Oasis

In the 1920’s my grandparents bought our family land and built a small house.  They lived a rural life raising cattle and growing their fresh food in several large garden areas. Here they raised their three daughters. Luckily for me, my Mom is one of these girls. When the girls got ready to marry, they each picked their favorite spots and built their homes and began their families. Our land is now included in the National Registrar Binghampton Rural Historic Land   [2]. (more…)

Destiny and What Could Have Been

By: Tena Bastian

Destiny is an interesting turn of events that leads you where you’re supposed to be in life. It’s sort of like a recipe that consists of all the ingredients that are added along the way whether by your own hand or by the hand of fate. The recipe has a cup of free will, a cup of luck, a dash of what you learn as you go and a pinch of preparation; and as with any recipe, a little salt and a little sugar for flavor. Destiny is what it is and although there are choices to make along the way that may sway our destiny one way or another, the one thing that shall remain true is that at one point in our life, we will come face to face with our destiny. Reaping What We Sow

By Tena Bastian

I love strawberries. Last year, I planted three strawberry plants and was disappointed that although I spent hours weeding, fertilizing, watering and tending to those three plants, my harvest was 15 strawberries the size of a dime. I still had to go to the produce stand and the grocery store to buy myself strawberries when I wanted them.  The harvest that I was supposed to reap for all my hard work was barely worth the effort.  (more…)

If A Tree Falls

By: Tena Bastian

“If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it fall, does it make a sound?”

The answer to this age old question is a resounding YES. It has occurred to me that we are all here to do whatever it is that is important to us. Our passion for all things is like that tree. Even if we think that our passion, our life’s calling matters to no one, it does. Although it may not seem like it at the time, everything we do in this world, every effort we make affects someone in some way. My take on it is that we can’t control the outcome of our actions and we have no control on how it will change the lives of others but if we believe in what we do for the pure sake of doing it and doing it well, it will change the world in some way. Let me give you an a couple of examples. (more…)

Cowboy: The Ultimate Guide to Living Like a Great American Icon

Matt Pellegrini found himself pondering the question, “I wonder if anyone knew that cowboys even existed anymore, and, if they did, what did they do?

This is where the Journey of COWBOY began!  Matt Pellegrini and Celebrity Host of CMT’s Cowboy U, Rocco Wachman team up to bring you COWBOY; The Ultimate Guide to Living Life Like a Great American Icon.  This is the first book to explore through a pop-culture lens, the many facets of cowboy life.  It is a fresh take on all things Cowboy, with a kick of humor.

You will explore what defines a Cowboy, is it dress? work? culture? lore? history?  Or is it something you cannot see or hear, but something that comes from deep within?  COWBOY presents an insiders look on topics such as ranching, rodeo, chuck wagon cooking, cowboy music, country and western dancing, and we know the most important, the cowboy spirit! Life’s Own Rhythm

I wish I had known then what I know now.

It is amazing how many times we say that in the course of one lifetime and we all know that hindsight is 20 /20. Experience is something that can’t be bought, sold, inherited, traded or even given as a gift and yet the knowledge we gain from experience is priceless. I recently attempted to explain to someone who is younger, how the rhythm of life works and from the look on their face, I realized that it isn’t a lesson that we can share because each of us have to learn it in our own time.  There is a natural rhythm to life that allows us to learn what we need to know as we go along. Because of this, we will make mistakes and we will stumble but we are supposed to stumble along the way. That is what makes us remember the lesson the next time we need it. The unfortunate thing is that by the time we have learned our lessons and gained our experience, we are older. We are wiser yes, but still, that youth would have complimented the knowledge and experience so well! (more…)
