1. Always load your horse last in the trailer so it is the first one unloaded. By the time he’s got his horse unloaded, you will have your cinch pulled and be mounted up ready to go – lessening the chance of him riding off without you with your horse trying to follow while you are still trying to get your foot in the stirrup. The Cowgirl Posse

By Tena Bastian

Cowgirls are amazing women! We are strong and resourceful and hard working and when we get an idea in our heads, we run with it. When you put a bunch of Cowgirls together on a project, there is no telling what we can accomplish. Each of us has our own amazing talent and each of us has a circle of close friends with talents of their own. To harness those talents and to take all of those individual circles and bring them together in one place is like harnessing all of the elements in the universe to work together for a common cause. The good news is that we are about to do just that! (more…)

Dancing To Your Own Beat

Driving down our old country road, there is a house that sits up on a hill. The house is really nothing spectacular; however the show that you may be lucky enough to see if your timing is right is definitely worth the drive. There is a woman, middle aged, who stands out in her yard clad in her pajamas doing something that we have decided is a dance combined with martial arts. She has been doing this for years and there is something almost hypnotic about her movements. While others may laugh, I admire her carefree spirit because she is completely oblivious to anything around her.
Her life may be bogged down with worry, she may be battling cancer, she may be completely alone or she may be as crazy as crazy can be but she looks happy. Aside from anything else that might be going on in her life, while she is doing her routine, she is clearly at peace with the world. I live in a small town where most everybody knows most everybody else and I may have met this woman in passing at some point but from watching her dance, I am sure I don’t really “know” her at all. There have been times when I considered knocking on her door and introducing myself but when I work through the conversation in my head, it never plays out comfortably… it tends to go something like this; (more…)

The Key To Heaven

Everyone has a favorite piece of jewelry. Maybe it is a pretty necklace, a watch, a bracelet, whatever it is, it’s important enough to you that you wear it every chance you get. We all love getting new jewelry because that one piece can make our same old outfits look fresh and new. Then there are those pieces of jewelry that we tend to hold on to for sentimental reasons. The high school ring, a necklace that belonged to your mother or grandmother, a gift from an old sweetheart, we treasure these pieces because they hold our memories like an old locket holds a photo and as long as we have the piece of jewelry, the memory remains with us. Cowgirl For Congress
By Tena Bastian

It is obvious to me how the political climate in this country has moved into an extremely volatile state. The economy has sunk to such a low point with unemployment rising to near record numbers and the cost of everything is sky rocketing. Less money to spend and higher prices is enough to make any of us depressed. The equine industry is not immune to the negative changes in the economy. Not only is the average horse bringing less money and breeding programs are suffering but with the price of hay, feed and vet bills continuing to rise, it is becoming more difficult to feed the horses we keep while earning less of an income. My daughter and I always have the BEST conversations while cuddling in her bed right before lights out!  The other night our chatting brought us to the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  Without a pause in thought, she responded “A Fashion Designer AND a Vet!”  Can you only imagine the possibilities of these occupations combined!
